Carmignac Foundation
The initiative of the Fondation Carmignac, created in 2000 by Edouard Carmignac, is remarkable. It opened to the public on 2 June 2018 on the island of Porquerolles, a Mediterranean island described as a floating forest on the sea. This destination offers visitors a unique experience of discovering contemporary works of art from the Carmignac Collection in the magnificent setting of a national park. In addition to permanent exhibitions, the foundation offers temporary exhibitions, a sculpture garden and a rich programme of cultural events.
Porquerolles island
The choice of the island of Porquerolles as the home of the foundation is not insignificant. As Charles Carmignac, the foundation’s director, explains, the journey to the island represents a double crossing: physical and mental. It is a metaphor for the passage to the ‘other side’, a recurring theme in legends and initiatory journeys.
The spaces of the foundation
On site, visitors will discover a Provencal farmhouse harmoniously integrated into the landscape. Inside, the space covers 2,000 square metres dedicated to exhibitions. Natural light, filtered through a water-filled ceiling, illuminates the spaces below the surface. Outside, the 15-hectare garden, designed by landscape architect Louis Benech, is home to a series of works inspired by the island’s natural environment.
The foundation is an exceptional place where art, nature and culture meet, offering visitors an immersive and contemplative experience.
Sainte Clémence de la Verne
A former 11th-century monastery, you can get there by car (about an hour from the villa) or, for the bravest among you, by bike. But I would recommend that you are well trained and well equipped, and that you set off very early in the morning, as it’s a long ride.
History and architecture
The former monastery of Sainte-Clemence de la Verne is a historic gem nestled in the heart of lush countryside. Founded in the 11th century, it bears witness to medieval architecture with its sturdy stone walls and majestic vaults. A visit here will give you the chance to delve into history and discover the secrets of one of the oldest monasteries in the region. Every stone in this historic monument tells a story, from the monks who lived there to the evolution of monastic life over the centuries. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with the past and marvel at the architectural skills of the time.
Landscape and activities
In addition to its rich historical past, the monastery of Sainte-Clemence de la Verne is surrounded by a breathtaking natural landscape. Situated in the middle of a dense forest, the route to the monastery offers spectacular views, whether by car or by bike. For nature lovers, there are walks around the monastery to discover the local flora and fauna. It’s also the ideal place for photography, with its panoramic views and magnificent sunsets. Finally, the tranquillity and serenity of the site make it a perfect retreat for those looking to escape the noise and bustle of city life.
